Blind Field
Whilst colour photography can describe an image through vivid detail, there is a rather special quality in monochromatic photography that unlocks a deeper, layered experience by narrowing the viewer's focus to essential elements like form, contrast, and essence. Without the distraction of colour, the subtleties in light, shadow, and texture take center stage, guiding the eye to details that might otherwise go unnoticed. Monochromatic images can reveal subtle distinction of expression and structure, creating an almost meditative viewing experience where the interplay of tone and shape leads to a richer emotional resonance. Magdalena Wysocka and Claudio Pogo’s exhibition at Open Doors Gallery, presents a compelling study in the reimagining of monochromatic photography. ‘Blind Field’ is a photographic term which refers to something that lies outside the borders of the image, something suggested or implied, but not necessarily captured by the camera. Their practice is centered around collecting and re-contextualizing found imagery. They isolate fragments of vintage images, sourced from old photographs, books and other archives, transforming them into risograph-printed pieces that offer a new, untold narrative. By stripping away context and deconstructing each image, Wysocka and Pogo create space for personal interpretation, turning each print into a dialogue between artist and viewer. The choice of risograph printing adds a unique dimension to these artworks. Known for its tactile and imperfect qualities, Risography - a Japanese stencil printing technique from the 1960’s - gives each print a distinct materiality that feels personal and handmade. The process involves layering inks one at a time, which creates slight shifts unique to each print, embodying a sense of authenticity. As each image fragments, it blurs the line between what is "whole" and "incomplete," encouraging the viewer to question traditional ways of seeing. The monochromatic palette, paired with risographic texture, invites an intimate, meditative experience that merges mechanical and organic elements, reinforcing the deeply personal, evocative nature of these reconstructed visual narratives. |

Wysocka PogoMagdalena Wysocka [b.1987, Poland] and Claudio Pogo [b.1978, Germany] are a Berlin based artist duo who have been working together since 2016. With backgrounds in printmaking and photography, their work bridges a variety of related mediums, from large-scale printed canvas works to handmade photobooks. Their practice is centred around collecting and re-contextualising found imagery.
Material is sourced from vintage photographs, books and other archives, stripped of its original context and transformed to create new visual narratives. Wysocka and Pogo utilise Risography, a Japanese stencil printing technique from the 1960’s, to express this reinterpretation. They purposefully push the risograph’s boundaries heightening the elements of chance and unpredictability in the finished pieces. Their canvases become a beautiful and uniquely tangible reflection on the passage of time and context, as well as machine-made replication vs. hand-made interpretation. |
Open Doors GalleryFounded in 2017, OPEN DOORS GALLERY is a global platform for contemporary photographic artists. The gallery aims to give the world’s best emerging talent an opportunity to reach new audiences, and works with a very broad range of artists.
