The only records of our ancestors are in their fossils
fos·sil (fsl)
n. 1. A remnant or trace of an organism of a past geologic age, such as a skeleton or leaf imprint, embedded and preserved in the earth's crust. 2. One, such as a rigid theory, that is outdated or antiquated. [From Latin fossilis, dug up, from fossus, past participle of fodere, to dig.] Regardless of origin, there comes a moment in every life when a lesson is learnt as old a humankind itself. That, contrary to any thought rendered up to that moment, the You one has come to know is not Forever. You perhaps have not heard the word immortal yet but just by becoming conscious of the concept of your own mortality, and that of every other living thing, irrevocably alters the way you view yourself, the world and your place and time within it. Each individual and generation learns this ground faltering piece of information under a unique set of social, politcal and environmental conditions however one thing remains the constant among the flux. It affects everybody and every body. You are now aware of your own body as more than just your conduit to existence but as an organic and therefore degradable vehicle for your other, esoteric self. You realise that it, like everything else, is in fact made up of Material. Merely a fabric composed of an exclusive weave that wears itself as the human form. |
Where Bianca’s remarkable images, careful compositions and considerate constructions, resonate deepest is in reminding the viewer that whilst this material will wear, break down and deconstruct it is only to transmute into another form. Another item in the wardrobe of creation. The word Fossil stems from the Latin to dig. By going beneath the surface she has created illustrative suppostions of what intrigue might cause us to scratch around but might for some be uncomfortable to dwell upon. We all have the potential to become something else, whilst living in this form and as it turns out the next and the one after that. We know we shall decompose, burn or vapourise into our next incarnation but unless we all become aware of our ability to tranform in our current guise we risk becoming calcified in our approach to change. Then the true potential and predisposed nature of our instincts and capacity to experience and grow will never be appreciated or realised. We will become immaterial and it could be a very long time, if at all, resurrection comes around. Just ask our ancestors. Bryony Fraser |
